Investigation Into Liberia-Senegal Riot Begins

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

The commission set up by the Ministry of Youth and Sport to investigate the circumstances leading to the riot and the extent of the damage from the match between Liberia and Senegal on October 10, 2004 has begun.

The Chairman of the investigation committee, former Liberian FA president Willard Russell said the exercise will take place for not more than a month.

According to him, the investigation will focus on  spectators who attended the game, some of those who were arrested, victims of the riot or their relatives and observers of the riot.

"Questionnaires will also be one of the methods the commission has decided to use in gathering the necessary information," stated Mr. Russell.

He added that the commission will be interviewing people along the route to the field; from the GW Gibson  School   and from the SKD Sports Complex to Double Bridge. "Visit will also be paid to area where a lot of football enthusiasts live," stated Mr. Russell. He referred to New Kru Town and Logan Town.

He said the commission will speak to security institutions, the LFA and the technical staff of the match. "We invite everyone who is prepared to offer an opinion or suggestion to us."

It has been a month since the commission was set up to investigate the soccer violence, but Mr. Russell said, "we have been meeting except for the break" due to the October 29 fracas in Monrovia.
Despite the delay, Mr. Russell said his commission is ready to work, and they would do so  by listening to commentaries, whether they were inflammatory or not.

At the end of the investigation, Mr. Russell promised to make recommendations based on what has been gathered.
