JULY 29, 2002

Liberia’s Soccer Maverick, George “Oppong” Weah, over the July 26th weekend, led Liberia’s darling club, Invincible Eleven, to a 3 - 2 victory over their arch-rival Mighty Barrolle. The game was played at the Cooke Memorial Stadium in the Township of Union, New Jersey.

The spectacular encounter was the main event marking this year’s celebration marking the 155th anniversary of Liberia’s independence. The match was witnessed by thousands of spectators who emotionally sang the Liberian National Anthem and jubilated as their memories flashed back to similar events in Liberia in the past.

This victory by I.E. over Mighty Barrolle came as a much sought for revenge for a similar 3-2 defeat I.E. suffered at the hands of Mighty Barrolle at the game held in Baltimore, Maryland. That game was the first in a series of three encounters being held under the auspices of the I.E.-Barrolle Union on the July 4th weekend. This victory by I.E. therefore ties the series. The tie-breaker is expected to come in Providence, Rhode Island, when that City hosts the Labor Day Weekend encounter between the two arch-rivals. That game will be played on August 31, 2002.

Featured in the July 26th weekend’s match for I.E. along with George Weah were stars like Simon Mattar, Aaron Pobleh, Malcolm Cephas, Anthony Togba, Timothy Bangue, Jonah Sarwieh, Francis Manneh, Doko, Barclay, etc. For Mighty Barrolle were Frank Seaton, Patrick Saar, Solomon Joe, Henry Brown, Stanley Phillip, Majik, Dominic Brapoh, etc.

Among the thousands who witnessed this historic game was an array of former Barrolle and I.E. stars. Some former soccer greats who were there to cheer their young successors in Mighty Barrolle were: Mass Saar, Sr., Dr. Thomas Boker, George Sackor, Winston Taylor, Solomon Sipply, Dr. Charles Woefel and Joseph (Forkay) Nippy. On the I.E. side were greats like Garrison Sackor, Santos Maria, Dr. Aloysius Hanson, Benedict (Mama Musa) Wisseh, Tarpeh George, and Marbue Richards.

According to the Event Steering Committee Chairman, Mr. Morris George, the game was a resounding success. He declared that, “the I.E.-Barrolle Union has started on a strong foundation”. Mr. George disclosed that rough estimates of proceeds from the game stand just under $19,000.00. He however cautioned that expenses will have to be deducted before the net proceed can be determined.

The I.E.-Barrolle Union is expecting thousands of spectators to storm Providence, Rhode Island, to witness the nerve-wracking tie-breaker game on August 31, 2002.
