Homeless World Cup Wants Weah On Board

July 31, 2006

As Liberia prepares to make its debut in this year's Homeless World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, former football legend George Manneh Weah has been invited by the organizers.

In a letter to Ambassador George Weah dated July 25th, the President of the Homeless World Cup Mel Young said, "I would like to invite you to attend the event and to become an ambassador for the Homeless World Cup. I am aware of the support you give to grass roots football initiatives and it would be just great if you could join us in Cape Town".

The tournament has been slated for 23rd to 30th September with 48 countries expected to contest including Liberia.

It is yet unknown whether Weah who is said to be out of the country presently would honor the invitation.

However, Mr. Young further assured, "We could sort out details of your involvement if you were able to make it down. I know that the players Union are organizing an anti-racism conference and you might like to play a part in that. There are many other ways you can be involved".

This latest communication to the Liberian football legend could serve as a major boost for the competition especially at the time Liberia is making it first appearance.
