Gbour: Lady At The
Top Of Basketball

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The 2005 National Basketball League began
under the leadership of Madam Gbour Wilson.
She succeeded Philibert S. Browne as
president of the Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF) at the end of
last season. The latter quit the LBF’s top job following his election
as president of the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC).
The new LBF president becomes the first
lady to be at the helm of the second popular sport in the country.
She ha stepped into the shoes of
Counsellors Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes, Minister of Youth and Sports, and
S. Izetta Wesley, president of the Liberia Football Association (LFA)
as well as the former LNOC president Mrs. Deborah J. Williams. They
all made history by becoming the first women to head these sporting
institutions.
The LBF president is a basketballer and
former track and field athlete, having played and run for the St.
Theresa Convent Catholic School and the Cuttington University College
(CUC).
Madam Wilson is also president of the
Liberty Athletic Club (LAC), arguably the most organized track and
field outfit in the country.
Prior to taking
over the gavel of authority at the Sports Commission, she served under
Mr. Browne as Vice President for Administration. It was apparently
based on her performance that she got the vote of confidence to go at
the top of Liberian basketball.
