Gbarpolu & Sinoe Celebrate Gold

       ( 4/06/2004 Monrovia) -Gbarpolu County and Sinoe County have won the 2004 National County Sports Meet organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Internal Affairs Ministry as way of reconciling the Liberian people through sports after a period civil war.

      The two counties celebrated gold on Monday before a huge gathering of sports fans at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) on Lynch Street.

    In the grand final in kickball, Sinoe County nailed Maryland County 9-3 in the day's first encounter that was also witnessed by the First Lady of Liberia, Mrs. Rosalyn Bryant.

    Thereafter in soccer, Gbarpolu County maintained its unbeaten record in the County Meet by dragging "big brother" Lofa County 2-1. Eric Weeks put Gbarpolu County up in the first half before Boakai Foday scored the other goal. Lofa County later pulled a goal back.

     Following the two matches, the kickball trophy was awarded to runners-up Maryland County and winner Sinoe County by the President of the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC), Mrs. Deborah J. Williams, while the Youth Representative and Co-Chairman on the Committee on Youth and Sports at the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (NTLA), Honorable Rufus Neufville presented the soccer trophies to runners-up Lofa County and winner Gbarpolu County.

    Meanwhile, Gbarpolu County striker Boakai was named the Most Valuable Player and Highest Goal Scorer by the County Meet's organizers.

     Boakai Foday scored eight goals, including one in the grand final on Monday, to lead Gbarpolu County to the title in soccer.

      The Gbarpolu County skipper Bill Paytoe was awarded the Best Defender title.
