Former Sports
Writers President Begins Campaign
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The former President of the Sports Writers
Association of Liberia (SWAL) has begun his campaign for the
November 13 elections of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL).
Mr. Henry Boyd Flomo began his campaign after he
was cleared last Saturday by the PUL Elections Commission, headed by
the former PUL boss James Kaizolu, to challenge Peter Quaqua for the
post of Assistant Secretary-General.
The Henry Flomo Campaign Committee said the official
launching ceremony will take place on Wednesday, November 10, 2004
in Monrovia.
Henry Flomo is entering the PUL race after
serving the Union's strongest auxiliary group, the Sports Writers
Association of Liberia (SWAL).
Flomo is determined to help strengthen the Union.
"I have noticed that the Union is suffering from attention on the
part of the elected officials," Flomo indicated.
"It's not that they are not qualified, but the
matter of time and willingness has a major problem," added Mr. Flomo.
"It's about time we contribute our quotas. We
have the necessary experience and want to begin from the Assistant
Secretary-General post."
Flomo, hailing from Zorzor District, Lofa
County, has served the Sports Writers Association as
Secretary-General and later President of SWAL.
Seemingly an easygoing man, Flomo is known
for speaking out against the ills of society, especially in the
field of sports. Edwin Snowe is a living witness to Flomo's critical
statements against the downward trend sports have taken in Liberia.
While at the helm of SWAL, Flomo stood the
test of time and he made sure sports writers did not appear to be
ones that could be pushed around by sports officials.
Son of Captain James Flomo and Garmai Bedee,
Henry Flomo is currently the Assistant Director of Sports News of
the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS). There, Flomo also does news
casting and reporting as well as sports commentary.
A father of two children (Henry, Jr. and
Atlast), Mr. Flomo served as Managing Editor of the Voice of SWAL
and head of the PUL Press Club.
Mr. Flomo is now the Chairman of the
Elections Committee of the Center for the Promotion of Intellectual
Discourse (CENPID) and chief boxing referee of Liberia. He is a
former boxer.
Mr. Flomo is a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts
in Mass Communication, University of Liberia (UL).
As he prepares for the battle ahead, Flomo says:
"Expect anything in life."
