Foreign Based Players For Lone Star

South African-based Anthony Laffor
would form part of the Lone Star’s delegation.

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

At least eight foreign-based players are expected to be called for the national football team of Liberia, Lone Star.

The head coach of the Lone Star made the confirmation on Tuesday after the team’s training session at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) on Lynch Street.

The Lone Star is scheduled to play the national team of the Equatorial Guinea at the start of the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

Currently under mounting pressure from the local fans, who normally throng the ATS to watch the team’s training, Coach Nagbe disclosed that he would select one player from South Africa, three from Europe and four players based in Indonesia.

The national team coach declined to give the names of the players that he intends to call for the match.

But there are strong indications that the South African-based Anthony Laffor would form part of the Lone Star’s delegation.

In fact, the former LISCR FC hitman is expected to arrive in the country at the weekend. He has been in sparkling form for the South African premier league side Jomo Cosmos.

Laffor led the club to the Coca Cola Cup title. He was named Most Valuable Player at the end of the tournament.

With no clues on which of the numerous players in Europe that Coach Nagbe would choose, there are the likes of Kelvin Sebwe, Francis Grand Pa Doe, George Gebro, Oliver Makor, Dulee Johnson, Jimmy Dixon and Dioh Williams available.

The Indonesia-based players have been given four slots by the Lone Star head coach, but there over a dozen of them that have arrived either for vacation or the pending match.

Those already in town include Fallah Johnson, Joseph Amoah, Varney Boakai, Steve Mennoh, Rashidi Williams, Perry Kollie, Takpo Sonkarliey and Murphy Nagbe.

Of the bunch, Coach Nagbe made strong emphasis on Steve Mennoh, thus giving the possibility that he would be selected.

But reports filtering from the Ministry of Youth and Sports speak of the selection of five foreign-based players for the match. They are Kelvin Sebwe, Louis Crayton, Anthony Laffor, Francis Grand Pa Doe and Murphy Nagbe.
