Female
Champions For Sierra Leone
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The reigning female soccer champions Tito United have been given the
opportunity of competing with teams from neighboring Sierra Leone.
According to Mr. Siaka A. Sheriff, the club will leave the country
next month to play two matches in Freetown.
Mr. Sheriff, who is the Liberia Football Association (LFA) Vice
President for Administration, has said that Tito United would play
their first match on November 12 while the second and last match would
fall on November 13, 2005.
However, he did not give the names of the clubs that Tito United would
be engaging while in Sierra Leone.
Ahead of the trip, Mr. Sheriff said that the Tito United is currently
training in Gardnersville and that the club would conclude preparatory
exercises at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) before leaving the
country.
As stated by the LFA Vice President, whose wife Mrs. Geraldine
Doe-Sheriff is the president of the Tito United, the team’s travel to
Sierra Leone is not a fulfillment of his pledge made for winning the
championship but one that is geared towards the exposure of female
soccer to the outside world.
He said that as part of his effort in promoting female soccer
internationally, Tito United has invited players from other female
teams for training and subsequent inclusion on the trip as guest
players.
In the near future, Mr. Sheriff looks forward to the participation of
the national female team and clubs in African and world competitions.
