FC Dallas defender miffed

By stevedavis@dallasnews.com

At least one FC Dallas defender is unhappy with manager Colin Clarke's recent defensive experiments. Chris Gbandi, the 2002 overall No. 1 MLS pick, has found himself on the bench.

Gbandi was starting earlier this year and drawing coaches' praise. But he had to serve a one-game suspension (April 29) and has apparently lost his place.

Clarke wanted to see Alex Yi in the middle and has moved Greg Vanney to the outside for now, replacing Gbandi. Gbandi says he's confused and particularly upset by the lack of communication.

"Obviously, they don't want me here," he said. "If they don't want me here, fine. The team is good enough. The players here are good enough. ... Why don't they just call me into the office and tell me a reason? I'm wasting my time here."

Clarke contends he has talked to Gbandi about his status. Clarke said the benching has nothing to do with Gbandi's red card three weeks ago against Kansas City, a tactical foul that turned profitable when FC Dallas won the match.
