Ethiopian National Soccer Team suffers two friendly defeats

Addis Ababa, March 23, 2003

As part of the preparation for the 24th African Nations Cup Qualifier against Liberia, the Ethiopian National Soccer Team has conducted friendly matches against three Premier League sides.

In the first match, the National Team succeeded in winning Nyala 4-1. In the second match against Electric the National side conceded at 2-1 defeats.

In the third day match, once again the National Team suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Insurance on Wednesday.

The National Team coach Joechen Figge in a press conference given on Thursday, admitted that he was now building a new team. "Most of the players are new, and when they are synchronized they will perform well," he said.

The weakness of the team was evident. They have 3 points from 2 games. The result puts them in fourth place behind Guinea, Liberia and Niger.

The National Team would face Liberia on March 30 in Addis Ababa. Reports indicated that the Liberian side was facing serious financial problems.

Some of the best players in the side were unlikely to come to Addis due to Liberian Federation’s failure to cover their expenses.

But it must be put into consideration that the team had experienced veteran players like Weah.

Considering this, it may not be easy for the National Team to collect the three points on home ground. Now the Team coach has one week until the crucial match.
