Ethiopian National  Soccer Team to travels to Liberia

Addis Ababa, June 3, 2003

The Ethiopian national soccer team has left for Accra, Ghana, on its way to Liberia.

Reports from the Ethiopian Football Federation confirmed that after staying in Accra for a couple of days, the National Team would fly to Monrovia on Wednesday to play the Liberian side next Sunday in the second leg of the 2004 African Nations Cup qualifier.

Earlier, it was reported that the Ethiopia vs. Liberia second leg was to be played in a neutral country due to the security problem in Monrovia. But now it was decided that the match would be played in the Liberian capital.

Liberia had 3 points from 3 games, while Ethiopia was in second place with 6 points from 3 games.

A win for Ethiopia would certainly widen the opportunity to go through to the 2004 African Nation's Cup to be held in Tunisia.

Coach Asrat Haile said that taking on a strong Liberian side under this difficult condition was a tough job.

"But with our players fully determined and our best performance, we might win the game," he remarked.

The coach added that an away win was usually difficult, but there was a possibility of sharing of a point.

Guinea who would meet Niger same day were on top of the table on 6 points and 4 additional goals. If the national side collects a point and Guinea drop points, it would be advantageous.

Only 18 players flew with the national side after 12 players were dropped from the originally selected ones.
