Doe fired over bad start

Liberian-born Boniface Doe has become the first coach in the First Division to lose his job following an "unsatisfactory" start to the season.

Phindani Nene, owner and chairman of Durban Stars, told The Mercury he had fired Doe because "Doe failed to communicate effectively with the players.

"Secondly, Doe did not have a clear plan for the team. He played three different teams in the three games we have played since the start of the season. We got a sense he was still conducting trials," said Nene.

Durban Stars have a squad of 28 players from across the continent including Liberia and the DRC. Some are on loan from Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

In addition to being national coach of a Liberian squad that included former World Player of the Year George Weah in 1997, Doe has also had club coaching stints in Nigeria and Ghana. In his first game three weekends ago, Durban Stars gave a good display, drawing with PE outfit Rainbow Stars in Durban. They then lost 1-0 to FC Fortune in Wynberg. On Sunday they were beaten 2-1 by Vasco da Gama at home.

The First Division, which currently consists of inland and coastal streams, will be consolidated into one stream at the end of the season. Durban Stars have ambitions of playing in the Premier League in the coming seasons. Responding to charges that this was putting undue panic in the Durban Stars camp, Nene said: "We remain very focused on qualifying for the Premier League or finishing in a decent position. Because we want to go places, we are results-driven, no excuses," he said.

Caretaker coach Clinton Larsen will be assisted by CEO Lawrence Ngubane against Park United in Port Elizabeth this weekend.
