County Meet Faces Postponement

3/ 19/ 2004 Monrovia-The organizing committee of the National County Meet has, in collaboration with County Sports Coordinators, agreed to reschedule the commencing date of the festival.

In a release issued by the Youth and Sports, instead of the previous date of March 5, the National County Meet would, according to the organizers, be held from March 19, to April 3, 2004. The organizers disclosed that the event will last for 21 days.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Deputy Youth and Sports Minister for Operations, Peter W. Vuku, blamed the postponement on the delay in the approval of the Budget sent to the Finance Ministry.

The organizing committee mentioned that the chairman of LURD, Sekou Damate Conneh, has pledged 20 footballs for the National County Meet.

The National County Sports Coordinators have meanwhile confirmed the ejection of track and field and basketball on grounds that there are inadequate funds to run the four disciplines, including soccer and kickball, that were initially targeted.

The decision to have only soccer and kickball in the competition was, according to the release, reached during a meeting of the various committees and County Sports Coordinators at the Youth and Sports Ministry last Saturday.

They described the decision to have only soccer and kickball as a sign of gender equity "as we gear towards peace and National Unity through sports."
