Champions Jomo Cosmos swept the boards at last night's Coca-Cola
Cup Awards. Cosmos won the Cup earlier this season and they scooped
the four major individual awards at last night's ceremony in
Johannesburg.
The Coach of the Tournament award was a no-contest. Jomo Sono won the
award. The Cosmos mentor was also voted coach of the month earlier
this season. He guided his team to their second Coca Cola Cup title in
three years.
Despite the success in the knock-out tournament, Cosmos are occupying
11th position on the PSL log - well outside the top eight who
automatically qualify for the SAA Supa 8 competition. Sono says he
still wants to consolidate the team's position on the log. "We have to
make sure we are safe because the league is starting next month and we
have to go flat out and compete for the league now."
Anthon Laffor, a Liberian midfielder, was voted Player of the
Tournament and received a cheque of R50 000.
Avril Phadi, Bafana Bafana's new goalkeeper, won his category, while
striker Mamadou Diallo received recognition for finishing as joint top
goal scorer in the tournament. He scored four goals.
SABC TV News was also among the award winners. Matlhomola Morake, a
soccer reporter, received the Flair TV News Reporter Award.
