Chief Boxing Referee Deeply Concerned
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The chief boxing referee of Liberia, Henry B. Flomo, is
deeply concerned about the lack of attention being given a proposed
world boxing championship in Liberia.
The Diversified Promotions and Services of Malaysia and
the Sekkai Promotion of Ghana, led by Mrs. Weade Kobah-Wureh, sent a
proposal for the boxing championship in November last year to the
Ministry of Youth and Sports. The championship is co-named WBC@L and
is scheduled for March.
The Sports Ministry thereafter forwarded the invitation
to the Liberia Boxing Association (LBA) to work out modalities that
would lead to the hosting of the championship.
Flomo said, "the championship will put Liberia
everywhere in terms of viewing if international television covers the
events."
He lamented, "even though Liberia does not have world
champions but the tournament could leave room for exhibition matches
that could involve local boxers."
According to Flomo, the proposed championship is
capable of exposing local boxers, as there could be some scouts
available.
"It's an opportunity that should not slip away because
we have suffered too long," Flomo cried.
"We don't have a ring and these are opportunities that could give us
some."
The chief boxing referee believes Liberia stands to benefit
more. "The government and the LBA should see reason not to let the
chance slip away."
He appealed to the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC)
to assist in making the proposal a reality.
Flomo, a former boxer, admonished the LNOC to assist
with the training of boxing referees and judges. |
