2007 champion of the National County sports Meet, Bong County is set
to retain the third place title as Consolation to it citizens for
failing to win the 2010 championship of the month long competition.
Bong will engage Grand Bassa on Friday for the 3rd place of the
National County Meet.
In an interview with the County’s football team head coach, Cooper
Sannoh, who is also head coach of Liberia Football Association (LFA)
second division outfit, Manding Jallah, he noted that his boys were on
course to battle for the champions, but were robbed by referee Jerry
Yeke, who denied them of the equalizer after rattling the net in the
closing moments of the first half.
Bong County was defeated 1-0 by its County meet bitter river, Nimba
County to end the county’s quest for the championship.
“We were down 1-0 at first half, but equalized during the same half;
bias officiating from the referee led to our defeat.
“We are not deterred by the defeat. This is football game and these
things happened some times.
‘All we want to do now is to concentrate on the third place title
which we believe will serve as consolation to our many citizens at
home and in Diaspora,” Coach Cooper noted in a rather positive manner.
Meanwhile, Nimba and Grand Gedeh Counties have qualified to the grand
final of the 2009 2010 National County sports meet.
Nimba achieved the feat after edging Bong County 1-0, while Grand
Gedeh County went through with a 4-2 dramatic penalties shootout
against sentimental favorite Grand Bassa County.
Earlier before the football matches in the seminal final, Nimba won
Margibi 6-3 homeruns, while Maryland thrashed Rivercess 11-9 homeruns
in the kickball semi finals.
The latest results mean Nimba and Maryland Counties will battle for
the championship in the kickball category on the same day.
The grand final of Liberia’s most prestigious sports tournament comes
on Sunday, January 18, 2010 beginning at 2: PM at the Samuel Kanyon
Doe (SKD) sports complex in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
