FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has sent a letter of condolence to
Liberian FA president Mr. Musa A. Bility upon hearing the
news of the death of the African nation’s national team
coach Bertalan Bicskei at the age of 66.
“On behalf of FIFA and the worldwide family of football, I
wish to extend our deepest condolences to you, to everyone
at the Liberia Football Association and, most importantly,
to his young players, friends and loved ones.”
Mr. Bicskei, born in Budapest, was a goalkeeper of note who
played for fabled Hungarian club sides Ferencvaros and
Honved as well as the Hungarian national team. He later went
on to coach Hungary to victory at the European Youth
Championship in Moscow in 1984 and won the Hungarian
national league as coach of his former side Honved Budapest.
He also led the national team of Malaysia and Egyptian
outfit El-Masry as head coach before taking over the reins
of Liberia in July 2010.
“We would hope that in some way our words of support may
help to bring a little peace and solace at this time of
sadness,” concluded Blatter in his letter.
