By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

On the occasion of her election as President of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), the President of the world football governing body, FIFA, Mr. Joseph Sepp Blatter has extended his deepest congratulations as well as best wishes of success at the helm of Liberian football for the next four years.

In a communication, dated March 20, 2006, addressed to Cllr. Sombo Izetta Wesley, President of the LFA, Mr. Blatter cited that in the past years, Liberian football has been marred by internal wrangle as well as regular skirmishes with the previous Sport Minister, Cllr. Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes, but he said: “today your country as a whole is experiencing a new dawn with hope and enthusiasm towards the future.”

The FIFA boss added: “your reelection and the nice conceding of your opponent, Mr. Siaka Sheriff, should open an era for Liberian football with unity among its members, dedication for its development and a dense cooperation with the government of H.E. Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.”

Mr. Blatter assured Cllr. Wesley of his support and on FIFA assistance if she wants to achieve the complex task to help the football of her country to reach new heights and to regain the international recognition it deserves.

“Allow me finally to ask you to convey my congratulations to your colleagues elected and reelected with you, in particular to the 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, Mr. Pennoh Bestman and Adolph Lawrence.
“Looking forward to seeing you again soon in Germany during the FIFA Congress, I remain,” Blatter concluded.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ousmane B. Conateh, 1st Vice President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) and Member of the African Football Confederation (CAF) has also congratulated Cllr. Wesley.
“I heard the good news of your reelection to office as President of the Liberia Football Association to accomplish the very good work you have started to take football in your country to the apex.

“Please continue to work as a team leader,” Conateh, a Gambian who is also Match Commissioner of CAF, stated.
