Liberia has gotten a better ranking in basketball.

Unlike football, Liberia has an impressive standing.

The country ended 2005 as the 83rd ranked team in the world.

The latest ranking was released by FIBA.

FIBA is the Federation of International Basketball Federation.

The FIBA ranking puts the country among the top 20 teams in Africa.

Liberia was expected to get a better ranking.

But the country failure to participate in two major competitions saw it at the current position.

Liberian failed to participate in the U-20 championships for men and the Women Basketball Championships.

An inaugural basketball competition will come on next week.

The tournament will take place at the Open Air Sports Commission.

Eight teams will line up for the chase.

There will be four female teams and four male teams.

The female teams are K-Deltas, Phoenix, Commissioner and Supreme Sisters.

Invincible Eleven, Mighty Barrolle, LPRC Oilers and Uhuru Kings make up the male teams.

The competition will begin on January 13.

Reports say the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) is organizing the tournament.

Liberian basketball star Boakai Lalugba has shown another impressive performance in the Finnish Korisliiga.

The Liberian returned from the Christmas holiday to lead his club to a high profile win.

Lalugba scored 30 points in the Korihait league victory on Wednesday.

The Korihait beat the Aura Basket 96 to 87 points in a classical show down.

The win keeps the club in the 6th position on the league table.

The game was a round 23 Korisliiga match.
