Athletics Coaching Course Begins
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF), under the leadership of Eric
Williams, is holding a two-week Level One Coaching Course in the
country.
The course began on May 20, 2006 and will run up to June 4, 2006.
It has attracted 18 participants representing clubs and schools,
including five females, although only 15 of them turned out last
Saturday for the opening ceremony.
Two experts in athletics, Dr. Henry Augustine Pufaa of Ghana and
Augustine Kah of The Gambia, are the lecturers of the course.
The Level One Coaching Course would involve theory at the LAF
headquarters on Capitol Bypass and the practical aspect at the
Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
The Coaching Course would cover a number of events in athletics.
They include sprints, javelin, long jump, hurdles, shot, middle
distance, high jump and relays. Some of the other events are discus,
hammer, triple jump, walks and pole vault.
The course in athletics would be climaxed by written exam, final
evaluation of course by participants and lecturers, closing ceremony
and the awarding of certificates.
The Coaching Course is regularly organized by the International
Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to ensure that each
country has sufficient coaches, qualified according to international
standards.
