At MYS; Asst. Minister Marginalized?
Wednesday, 12th December 2005
D. Webster Cassell

Assistant Ministers at the Ministry of Youth and Sports have complained of marginalization by Minister Cllr. Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes.

Speaking to this paper yesterday, the MYS Assist. Minister for Sports, Mr. Richard T. Wleh, Sr. said, due to this situation, their respective capacities to function in such stead have been undermined.

On behalf of his colleagues, Mr. Wleh said they are all qualified individuals with requisite credentials and have the technical know-how for the job, yet for no reason, have been abandoned by their boss.

“Just imagine, we are Assistant Ministers but have been treated like children, only because the Minister wants to function in all the areas,” Mr. Wleh iterated.

Mr. Wleh disclosed that most of the work at the Ministry, mainly ministerial functions are being carried out by the Minister’s advisor, something he said should be done by them.

Mr. Wleh continued, by describing the Adviser as another position that was created by the minister to oversea the functions of Assistant Ministers at the MYS.

“The problem is form the minister, I don’t know, maybe because we are not from her setting,” Mr. Wleh said.

“We did not do well in these two years only because people that were allotted for setting post have been abandon when it comes to money to carry out their duties. Only because they want to eat the money” Mr. Wleh noted.

Mr. Wleh attributed the situation to the misplacement of people in government, stressing, “there is a need to put the right people who know the job and can perform in place.

He admonished the in-coming government to properly carry out their appointments, because, as he termed it, “if the same old selections are made, things will still remain the same way and might even worsen.”

“We hold the credentials but are still marginalized, only because people want to do what they think is good and not what is good for the country,” Mr. Wleh concluded.

Our efforts to get the side of Minister Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes on the allegations levied against her office proved futile as she was said to be out.
