The Alpha Old Timers Sports Association on Sunday, April 19, 2009 honored veteran Liberian sports administrator Mr. Willis D. Knuckles, Jr. for his valuable services to the Association for the past 39 years.

The ceremony took place at the Association football pitch in Duport Road in Paynesville in a one day soccer tournament.

The four teams that made up the Alpha Old Timers Sports Association, Hunters, Lions, Vikings and Strike Force were in attendance.

Hunters, the team of the honoree emerged as champions after defeating Strike force in penalty shoot out in the first match and a 1-0 victory over Lions in the grand final.

During the closing ceremony, Alpha old Timers president Mr. Musa Bility, who is also president of Liberia Football Association (LFA) premiers club Watanga FC, said honoring Mr. Knuckles is being hailed by members of the Alpha Old-timers since in fact the veteran has shown not only passion for the world’s popular sport, but for his numerous services to Alpha Old Timers and the sporting circle in general.

As for his part, Mr. Theophanous C. Gould said 39 years ago Mr. Knuckles was part of a group that organized Alpha and honoring him at this time was expedient.

He said, the honoree has struggled over the years to make Alpha second to none in Liberia.

He refereed to Mr. Knuckles as the living Alpha.

In a short statement from the honoree Mr. Knuckles, said he was happy to be with Alpha for the past 39 years and hopes to be around for at least 10 more years in an effort to make the association a formidable force.
